This project sought to reinterpret the role of an art gallery in modern society. Art has played a crucial role in history, however, with the advent of post modernism, the artistic world has lost touch with many people. This project aimed at reintroducing a lost audience to art.
Functional art highlights the intricacies behind something being made and the artistry behind this process. The gallery is aimed at making the occupants aware of the values and functions that art has for their lives.
The building serves as an icon to its surrounding using bold curves providing shelter from the weather and a valid option for social engagement. The design is adjusted to make the occupants as thermally comfortable as possible without the use of auxiliary heating or cooling.
The design is steeped with energy efficient techniques that went from materials to the proportion of windows in certain areas. In some areas, the glazing is minimal and only used to allow for natural light into the building. The building uses its fluid form to maximise the amount of natural light in the interior part of the building, while at the same time creating pockets of privacy in other areas.
